In a polarized political climate, one issue stands out as a point of agreement: the urgent need to combat human trafficking and child exploitation. On Wednesday, September 11th we hosted another impactful ATIP (Anti-Trafficking in Persons) Policy Roundtable in the U.S. Senate, sponsored by our partner Street Grace. With more than 50 anti-trafficking organizations and numerous bipartisan Congressional offices participating, this event underscored a collective commitment to eradicate these horrific human rights violations. We started the morning by remembering that the US Capitol was the target of the plane that crashed in a Pennsylvania field. The sacrificial leadership of passengers cost them their lives and allowed us to meet here to fight for the freedom of others. Unfortunately, human trafficking continues to be a significant source of funding for terrorism to this day.
A Week of Action in Congress
The final three weeks in September are particularly significant in Congress as lawmakers approach the election recess. Among those prioritizing this cause were Senator Marsha Blackburn, Senate Judiciary Chair Richard Durbin, Rep. Burgess Owens, and Congressman Chris Smith. We were also honored to welcome Tim Tebow from the Tim Tebow Foundation, who shared insights on the newly proposed Renewed Hope Act. Their engagement reflects a growing recognition of the urgency surrounding this issue, and their presence at the Roundtable signals a commitment to advancing critical human rights legislation.
Building Bridges and Creating Change
Effective coalition building and collaboration is a primary ingredient to nonprofit strategy and government relations, and the ATIP Roundtable was established several years ago to foster dialogue between Congressional leaders and those actively working in the field. By creating a space where participants can listen, ask questions, and engage in candid discussions, these Roundtables aim to transform dialogue into action. At the heart of this effort is the recognition that relationships matter. Building connections between lawmakers and anti-trafficking advocates can lead to meaningful legislative progress.
This collaborative approach allows for the sharing of experiences and insights that can inform better policy decisions. It’s a reminder that, regardless of political affiliation, we can unite around the fundamental belief that every child deserves safety, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive.
How You Can Take Action
As we reflect on the discussions and commitments made during the ATIP Roundtable, it’s clear that progress is possible when we work together. Each voice matters in this fight against human trafficking and child exploitation. By standing united, we can amplify our efforts and push for the legislative changes needed to protect vulnerable populations.
Ascend is grateful and honored to serve alongside such dedicated individuals and organizations. Together, we can pave the way for a future where every child is free from the horrors of trafficking and exploitation.
